You shared not only the theory and logic but also a lot of practical advice beyond “take probiotics and eat some yogurt”. Incredibly informative and, clearly, a lot of thought went into this. I will absolutely be saving your article as a reference and sharing it with others. Thanks again!

Unfortunate recommendation for Mountain Rose Herbs. I live in Eugene Oregon, I know employees there, and locals are dissatisfied with the consistency of quality in their products. Most of what they sell is 2-6 years old, and any good Herbalist will tell you that beyond the first year, herbs loose potency. Try instead sourcing herbs from an Herbalist, a local or regional farm, and always get herbs harvested within the year you’re purchasing them in.

Thank you for sharing! I have been teaching folks to “garden their gut” or “feed their forest” for years! I have a blog post on Restoring Digestive Health on my website and I will add a link to this article…it really highlights key areas of how digestion works.

I absolutely agree and I’m grateful for the info you’ve provided here. However, I think it’s important to also give a word of caution on herbs and allergies.

Last year, I was trying several new herbs for overall well being. I started making dandelion tea to replace coffee and I LOVED IT!!! I was also taking some digestive herbs. Not only did my health take a rapid and severe decline, I began to have some pretty horrifying issues with my heart speeding up, skipping beats and feeling like I was having a heart attack. For a few months, I really thought I was dying. I was getting so much weaker and worse than I had been in years.

I eventually found out that I was highly allergic to one (or more) of the herbs. I narrowed it down to a couple and I think it was either the fennel or the dandelion causing my heart issues. **At some point, I learned that if you’re allergic to ragweed, you shouldn’t use dandelion as it’s in the ragweed family but NO ONE TELLS YOU THAT!

2 days from stopping taking the herbs, I could tell a bit of improvement but it took about 2 – 3 months total for the erratic heart rhythms to stop and for my heart rate to return to normal and my overall sense of well being to return.

Are there ways to do allergy testing on yourself before consuming herbs? I’ve heard of things like skin prick tests and just curious if you know if this can show you which herbs you’re allergic to before taking them internally?

If feedback cannot accurately be sent to or from the gut and brain, cells with not function at 100% and breakdown begins. Its important to have your spine checked by a doctor of chiropractic who understands the holistic complexities of the human body.
